We are thrilled to debut two prints, The Milky Way and Orsted Station! Each appears in To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, albeit in black and white. Lovingly colorized, they are now exclusively available in Christopher’s Etsy store. TSiaSoS prints
Milky Way
This mixed media piece is by Christopher’s assistant, Immanuela Meijer. The only prompt he gave for the project was that it should include a galaxy representative of the Milky Way and somehow incorporate a fractal. You’re holding the result, one that he couldn’t be happier with. Of the work, Immanuela says:
It was important to capture the essence of To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and, consequently, the mystery and wonder of our universe itself. I overlaid a beautiful fractal by artist Spectral on a NASA image of galaxy M74 (since we don’t have a full photo of the Milky Way itself), then hand-painted the color and other elements. Hopefully this artwork sets your mind soaring through space, wondering what the next moment, the next star system, and the next galaxy holds.
These giclées are produced using archival ink and archival Baryta paper by the skilled folks at Reed Art & Imaging in Colorado. Measuring 13″x9″ (including the white border), each print is individually signed by Christopher with a silver ink pen. TSiaSoS prints
Orsted Station
Some of the images that most inspire Christopher were taken during NASA’s Cassini mission—stark vistas featuring the inky vastness of space and planetary hemispheres suspended in frame, as if by magic.
That’s what he wanted to capture in his drawing of Orsted Station, a military base in orbit around Ganymede, one of Jupiter’s many moons. He drew the original in black and white. Later when Tor Books produced an art print of the piece as part of the pre-order campaign for To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, his assistant, Immanuela Meijer, colorized the image, and the art department also dropped in a nebula drawn by artist Vadim Sadovski. As a final touch, the official logo of the UMC, created by Christopher’s family member Caru, graces the lower corner of the piece.
